Messy Church (All Age Worship) Thursday March 8th, 2018
Last month we took the two shortest parables in the bible which are about pearls, The kingdom of God and treasure!! This all sounds simple, but I think Jesus was finding it frustrating that the disciples couldn’t quiet grasp how won-derful life with Jesus is. We found them surprisingly difficult to explain ourselves! From a child’s perspective what is the Kingdom of God? Why a pearl not Gold or diamonds? What is a merchant? “Sell our most precious possessions?” Do you mean the jeans I got for Christmas or the new bed Mum and Dad have just bought me? Geoffrey, at the Ash Wednesday service yesterday, referred to “treasure” so we need to unravel the meaning for us too. In lent what will we give up for God’s treasure?
So Messy Church was tackling a difficult theme without realizing it. We burnt the edges off treasure maps to age them and marking all the places in Ashburton that you find Jesus (a surprisingly frequent occurrence the children declared). We looked for pearls in tagliatelle seaweed and followed a treasure hunt around the hall to find the treasure chest that Shan had made. All great fun but challenging for all the helpers to explain two simple verses from the bible.
Please pray for us as we grapple with the story of the woman anointing Jesus. This will be our Messy Church’s preparation for Easter. Funsize Church is tackling the theme of Christianity and Science another challenging subject! This next weekend’s subject is Fire and the burning bush!! Inspire us dear Lord.
